Fire-fighters, police officers, soldiers, sailors, air crew, prison officers, civil servants, teachers and nurses - just some of the vital careers in the public services. This two year course offers you the opportunity to develop your knowledge of the public services and prepare you for your career in the uniformed public services.
Career - In this unit you will explain different careers in the uniformed services and then explore a chosen uniformed service. You will also identify your own goals and targets to achieve entry to a uniformed service. You will then prepare a CV, personal profile or application and take part in a real or simulated interview. Following this, you will evaluate your performance and suggest areas for development.
Fitness - In this unit you will develop an understanding of health and well-being that contribute to physical fitness. You will identify your own level of physical fitness, then plan and participate in a training programme to develop aspects of your physical fitness to meet entry standards of a uniformed service. You will also evaluate the effectiveness of the training programme by reviewing the content.
Emergency Planning - In this unit, you will understand how the Civil Contingencies Act and emergency planning play a major role in preparing emergency services to respond effectively to major incidents. You will develop knowledge of the agencies involved in emergency planning, the need for this and the key aspects of civil contingency planning for major incidents. You will develop skills in preparing for a particular major incident and have the opportunity to practise and demonstrate these skills in a simulated scenario to show you understand how emergency and public services plan and manage major incidents.
Land-Based Activities - In this unit you will describe different land-based outdoor and adventurous activities. You will describe and demonstrate the skills and techniques required for land-based outdoor and adventurous activities. You will review their own performance and then develop a personal development plan based on this review.
Crime Scene Investigation - In this unit you will research the principles of crime scene management and carry out an investigation of a crime scene, securing evidence and producing a crime scene report. You will analyse outcomes of the data gathered and consider possible scenarios in order to reach a conclusion.
