Professor Fred Loebinger recently visited Ashton Sixth Form College.  Head of particle physics at Manchester University, Professor Loebinger gave a presentation entitled “the sex lives of quarks and gluons” which concentrated on particle physics. The talk will help prepare Physics students for their trip to Geneva to take a close-up look at the particle accelerators at CERN (The European Organisation for Nuclear Research) home of the Large Hadron Collider.

15 A2 students will be travelling to Geneva to support their studies on nuclear and particle physics. The trip has been supported by the Institute of Physics, Aim Higher and Ashton XL.

Jenny Welsh, Ryan Denny, Eleanor Bennett and James Berezowski watched the presentation. James will be leaving Ashton Sixth Form College in August to study Physics at Manchester University and used the opportunity to talk to Fred about specialising in Particle or Astro Physics. Jenny Welsh described the talk as “incredibly insightful”

Kulvinder Randhawa, Head of Physics commented, “This was a great opportunity for our students to gain a greater understanding of the processes involved in Large Hadron Collider, Professor Loebinger has really helped them to prepare for their visit to Geneva”.
