Ashton Sixth Form College student Chor Kay Yeung is celebrating after being awarded the John Nugent Scholarship for 2011.

John Nugent, MBE, Chairman and Chief Executive of The Stamford Group Limited until his death in 2010, was passionate about education and believed fervently in the need for young people to obtain the best possible education.

He established the scholarship scheme which provides financial assistance to encourage students to fulfil their potential through a University course.

Kay has worked extremely hard to achieve the necessary grades to gain a place studying Medicinal Chemistry at Manchester University and also worked hard towards securing the scholarship.

In order to be in with a chance of winning Kay was required to write a 1500 word personal statement describing her “present and future contribution to the community and industry”, after gaining a place on the final shortlist Kay was also asked to attend an interview and give a presentation to a panel of judges.

Scholarship SuccessKay has secured £3,000 for each year of her 4 year degree course and she already has plans for the cash; “I’ll be saving the money for essential items, it will help me to pay for all the books and equipment that the course requires.”

Kay joins a long list of past Ashton Sixth Form College Students that have received scholarships including 2010/2009 Tom Pendry University Scholarship winners David Davies and Terry Brighton.
