‘Rock Guitar in 11 Dimensions’
On Monday 21st October the College resounded with renditions of Black Sabbath and Queen.
Over 200 A-Level Physics and Music students and visiting GCSE pupils from Alder Community College, New Charter Academy, Astley Sports College and West Hill School were treated to a fantastic lecture - ‘Rock Guitar in 11 Dimensions’ by physicist and amateur rock star, ‘the Rock Doctor’, Dr Mark Lewney.
Mark began his lecture playing solos on request, followed by some clear explanations of the physics behind music and sound, delivered in a ‘cool, humorous style’. The lecture touched on the Higgs Boson, the Big Bang, String Theory and a world inhabited by 2-dimensional ants! Before finishing with a brilliant rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody, 11 dimensions style.
The event was sponsored by the Ogden Trust, which encourages and promotes the teaching and learning of Physics.
The students were all very impressed:
‘Great music, funny and informative’
‘Dr Lewney explained the theory of extra dimensions very well’
‘It was really interesting to hear that particles in the universe could be described in the same way as guitar’
