James started his visit with a meeting with the Ashton Sixth Form College LGBT platform group giving guidance and advice on how to attract students and highlight equality issues within college.

James went on to speak to students studying Public Services and English Language and Literature about his time in the military which included a tour of duty in Iraq, training sessions in Canada and riding a ceremonial horse at the Royal Wedding.

Students and staff then took the opportunity to ask James questions about his time in the army, working with Prince Harry and his parent’s reaction to him coming out. With the Winter Olympics taking place in Sochi, gay equality is a hot topic and this was a great opportunity to open the debate.

“Despite the fact being gay was legalised in 1967, there is still a vast amount of homophobia. James’ visit has changed the mind-set of many people, including myself, I hope many people will take action on tackling discrimination.”

English students Keeley Dargan and Caitlan Norbury (pictured) were also in the audience, commenting;

“James was an inspiration to us all,  he has opened our eyes to how recently such necessary changes in society have been made”
