Former students, staff and friends of James Haggerty, 20, have been paying tribute to the former Ashton Sixth Form College student, who died on Tuesday morning after the moped he was riding collided with a bus in Ayia Napa.

James, a student at Salford University, had visited Ayia Napa each summer since studying at college, working as a photographer and cameraman on the island and was also well known for his camera work on the Manchester nightclub scene.

Friends from College, University and the resort took to Twitter and Facebook to pay tribute to James. James worked across several venues in the resort and friends and colleagues have been paying tribute to the ‘fun-loving’ student.

Whilst at college James travelled to Uganda on a charity expedition along with Media Production student Ross McKnight, documenting the trip through photographs and producing the short film ‘Stick in The Ground’ which you can view here vimeo.com/46425884

College Principal, Dr Janet Nevin gave tribute to James;

“It was with great shock that I heard the tragic news of the death of James Haggerty last night. He was a superb student at Ashton Sixth Form College. He was hard-working, creative, talented and extremely personable. I accompanied a trip to Uganda in which James was a participant.  Staff and students were working with people over there and James, along with a good friend of his, made a fantastic film about the country, its people and their lives. He made a tremendous impact on all those he met and his death is a tragic and untimely loss. We will all miss him very much and I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to his family.”

James’ fiancé Mariel Alejandra Tamblay, was also critically injured during the incident. Tragically Mariel, from Sweden, had just flown out to Cyprus to be with James 24 hours earlier.

James’ family are asking friends and relatives to help raise the funds to return James home, pay medical bills and help to support Mariel’s recovery. Please support James’ Mother Julie, Father Geoff, brothers Gareth and Jonathan and his sisters Danielle and Victoria.

Mixed Martial Arts competitor and family friend Jonni Royle will be holding a Sparring Marathon, 100 x3 minute rounds. The marathon is open to mixed abilities from all martial arts backgrounds.
