Prof. Michael Wood, historian and BBC filmmaker explained how passions can carry our students a long way in life

15 April 2016

Professor Michael Wood, historian and BBC documentary film maker, visited Ashton Sixth Form College last week to talk to our students about 'The Excitement of History'.

During the lecture, he traced his own journey from Moss Side to his travels around the world. Professor Wood spoke about the conquistadors in Peru and Colonial India, illustrating his stories with clips of his journeys and the people he met along the way. Closer to home, Professor Wood spoke of Manchester's history, drawing students' attention to the industrial revolution and the work of the suffragettes in their local area, highlighting that History is all around us all the time.

He closed by saying: 'Don't forget your passions; they'll carry you a long way in life.'

Michael's visit was an opportunity arranged by our Raising Aspirations programme, designed to provide opportunities for all of our students to experience university style teaching and to attend unique lectures from prestigious guest speakers.
