The Extended Project Presentation took place in Costa Coffee recently. The event highlighted the incredible research and work of those students currently taking the EPQ alongside their studies at Ashton Sixth Form College.

The qualification allows students to explore an area of research that interests them, improving their ability to work independently and think critically.

There was an extremely varied range of topics covered and the thought gone in to produce such quality projects was outstanding. Some of these included:

• Lucy Cryer explored the social responses to the ‘Mission to Mars’
• Harry Valentine looked at Global ‘Elections and Leaders’
• James Smillie explored ‘Gun Violence in the US’ and whether or not there is a sustainable solution
• Isabel Anderson looked in to Japanese clothing and the meanings behind traditions
• Lydia Holt looked at historical figures and their approaches to leadership
• Anna Murphy explored the treatments for Dementia and their effect

Students identify their own topic for their EPQ and then design, plan and complete the project. Developing their skills in research and responsibility. For students who want to progress on to university, the EPQ gives them a step ahead in developing the skills required to work at degree-level. For those who want to begin an apprenticeship, the EPQ provides them with the skills to work and think independently, as well as managing their own time.

Following the hard work, time and effort put in to the project, students presented their EPQ's at the Poster Presentation. Staff and students across the college were invited to the presentation to ask questions and find out more about the projects. Students were also marked on this section of the project – taking in to consideration the appearance of the presentation, how well they presented their findings and how well they communicated their research to an audience.
