Politics students question party members

26 November 2018

Politics students were involved in a question time event with panel representatives from across the borough.

The external event gathered a range of panel members each with a different role within Tameside. These panel members included representatives from Shelter, My Life My Say, The Labour Party and the Commissioner for mental health and disabilities.

Students currently studying Politics at Ashton Sixth Form College prepared questions for each of the panel members on topics they were passionate about and wanted to hear more on. The questions were then directed to the panel and created excellent discussion and conversation on real issues affecting the people of Tameside.

The event explored issues such as the implications of BREXIT for young people across the country, the provision of mental health care for young people and how we deal with the homeless crisis.

Nicola Barthorpe, Head of History, Geography and Politics, said,

"It was a really good event and I am super proud of them. The event itself showed the importance of listening to young people upon such crucial issues."

Throughout their course, students studying within the History, Geography and Politics department regularly go on trips and welcome visitors to further their learning. Recently, Politics students have been involved in debates on BBC Radio 5 LIVE and visited the Houses of Parliament in London.

This particular event allowed them to form valuable links with a range of agencies that they can use in the future. It was the culmination of the work they did with the Tameside Women’s forum and UK Parliament earlier in the term.
