Graphic Designer illustrates political fairy tales

8 March 2019

Chloe Fraser studies English Language, English Literature and Graphic Design at Ashton Sixth Form College. For her final year project in Graphic Design, she has produced a fairy tale book of her own complete with illustrations called The Story You Were Never Taught.

Her Graphic Design work has often centred on using art in order to tell a story. Her first year project was comic-book related and her final year project focusses on fairy tales. She has combined her passion for literature and language alongside her outstanding skills in illustration and graphics.

Chloe has always had an interest in politics and decided to explore fairy tales with this topic in mind. Fairy tales are most commonly told to children. Often fairy tales are joyful and positive with a particular happy ending that round up the story. Chloe’s approach to the fairy tales however, was instead much darker and direct. Looking at three fairy tales in particular - Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella and Snow White – Chloe explored three very important topics that affect many people across the world today. Little Red Riding Hood covered the topic of sexual predators towards females, Cinderella looked at class systems in society, while Snow White created a conversation about racism.

The project itself took Chloe around 30 hours to put together and her hard work has certainly paid off. The book she has produced is artistically outstanding while also delivering a strong message that has such prominence in today’s society. Her work has not shied away from the bold statements she set out to make.
After completing her A-Levels at Ashton, she will progress on to study English Language and Literature at university. She currently holds offers from the University of Nottingham and the University of Manchester. Chloe began her early education at Droylsden Academy.

The 8th March also marks International Women’s Day, a fitting occasion for The Story You Were Never Taught.
