Ashton Sixth Form College welcomed Year 9 students from across Tameside and Oldham. 

Lost In Translation is a languages event that aims to help students understand the need for languages and to inspire them to pursue a career in languages. 

Throughout the event, students attended various language taster sessions with Ashton Sixth Form College teachers including French and Spanish. By experiencing college life, students developed their skills and challenged their language abilities. 

Ramzi Merabet from the University of Leeds led an introduction session to Arabic and Dr. Erin Carrie, Senior Lecturer in Linguistics at MMU, delivered a session on linguistics. As well as A-Level teaching, year 9 students were also able to experience university-style teaching - an entirely new and challenging environment.

 

Students then met with employers who use languages in their day-to-day roles. It was extremely important that students understood that their are many benefits to studying a language. There are a range of careers that require employees to be multi-lingual, or industries where a second language is a tremendous advantage. Employers included Jan Rausch, a conference and business interpreter, Martin Hemmings, a translator and editor, alongside Richard Lucker from the CPP Group, an international company that partners with businesses across the globe. 

The event was a fantastic day showcasing the countless possibilities available to students through languages.
