Ashton Sixth Form College student Sophie Whalley has been named a winner in The Horsfall’s 2020 Art Competition.

At Ashton, Sophie studies Fine Art, Graphic Design and Business. She is currently in her second year and previously studied at Longdendale High School.

Sophie submitted her portrait to the competition which opened for submissions during the Covid-19 lockdown. The Horsfall explained,

The theme is portraits, through recent events we’ve had limited contact with others and we want to celebrate coming back together with an exhibition of people.

While the brief of the competition was fairly broad, it focused on celebrating people and building back a sense of community. Students were also able to use any medium of their own choosing. 

Sophie's incredible portrait (pictured above), was chosen as one of only six winners by the Horsfall creative agents. Sophie received £100 worth of Fred Aldous vouchers to allow to continue her passion for art and purchase tools and equipment that will help her to continue to succeed creatively.

The winning entries formed part of The Horsfall's #FutureIsOurs Festival and her piece has been included in an online and public exhibition.  

The Horsfall is a gallery and space for creative engagement which is part of young people’s mental health charity 42nd Street. This Greater Manchester based charity provides free and confidential services to young people experiencing difficulties with their mental health and emotional wellbeing.
