Congratulations to Alex Kennedy who has been awarded the 'High Sheriff Award for Young Citizen of the Year 2020'.

Alex is currently studying Politics, Health and Social Care, and Biology at Ashton Sixth Form College and is in her first year of studies. 

The award is made by the High Sheriff of Greater Manchester, a ceremonial position appointed by the British Monarch.

The High Sheriff was looking for individuals who selflessly carry out voluntary or charitable work in their local community. They also wanted to recognise a young person who has delivered innovative work, making real impact on those across Greater Manchester. Alex received the award for her "outstanding contribution towards social action".

It is without question that Alex embodies everything that this award stands for. Alex is currently a Member of Youth Parliament for Manchester Central. In January 2021, she also became Women's Officer for Manchester Gorton Labour Party. Whilst studying for her A Levels, Alex devotes countless hours and days to helping her community. In such a short amount of time, she has gained incredible experiences within the political world, including most recently co-chairing and presenting at the Manchester Children’s Board. 

On winning the award, Alex said on Twitter, 

"I am actually in shock. I have been awarded the High Sheriff Award for Young Citizen of the Year 2020. Thank you so much Ashton Sixth Form College and Gorton Events Committee who had nominated me in secret."

Alex's teachers and tutor at the college are extremely proud of her achievements. If the start of her political career is anything to go by, Alex is set to continue to make positive changes for some time to come.
