Politics take part in digital hustings for Mayoral elections

27 April 2021

First year politics students attended a Digital Hustings event for the upcoming Manchester Mayoral election happening on 9th May.

This fantastic opportunity allowed current politics students studying their A Level course, to hear from Labour, Conservatives, Green and Lib Dem candidates. The candidates included Andy Burnham, Mel Horrocks, Simon Lepori and Arnold Saunders (representing Laura Evans).

Students were able to put their questions directly to the candidates, ensuring their opinions were heard and giving them a greater insight in to the process of electing a Mayor. It also gave them first hand experience of an election process, complimenting their in-class teaching tremendously.

The pictures above show Andy Burnham answering Robbie's funding question and Sacha commenting on the candidates' responses for her question on improving women's safety.

At a time when face-to-face interaction with the community and employers has been limited, this was a fantastic way to host a digital hustings event providing students with an incredible chance to put their skills in to practice.
