Education and Health students receive talk from safeguarding charity

6 February 2023

Our Education and Health students recently received a talk from the chairty, 'Afruca' - Africans Unite Against Child Abuse.

The aim of the charity is to advocate for the rights and welfare of African children. Their mission is to promote the well-being and protection of children and families in black and ethnic communities across the UK using a culturally-competent approach.

The session with our Health and Education students aimed to raise awareness and develop understanding of the charity, the work they do and the situations they face. The developing of understanding could support students' career development in health, care or education.

Some of the subjects explored were:

  • AFRUCA's work on FGM
  • What is FGM
  • Types of FGM
  • Who practices FGM
  • Reasons for practicing FGM
  • Short and Long-term health implications of FGM
  • FGM and mental health/psychology effects
  • Risk indicators
  • UK Law and FGM
  • FGM and safeguarding

Students found the session very informative!
