The XL Academy Science Conference
Last week, we welcomed Year 10's from local high schools across Tameside to our XL Academy Science Conference. This is the fourth XL Academy Conference we have hosted this year at Ashton Sixth Form College.
The theme of the day was Chemistry, Biology and Geology, with students participating in workshops throughout the day delivered by our Science teachers.
The Head of The XL Academy, Damian Windle gave students an introduction to The XL Academy, our long-lasting programme for high achieving students.
Students also welcomed guest speaker Juliette Hilton, a Newcastle University MPharm Graduate to the conference who delivered a talk called ‘The Antibiotic Resistance Crisis and the Role of the Pharmacist’. Juliette quizzed the students after the talk to make sure they understood the importance of her role and medical science in general.
Students had a fantastic day learning more about The XL Academy, what it's like to study A Level Chemistry, Biology and Geology at Ashton Sixth Form College, some of the students’ feedback included:
'My favourite bit was biology, it allowed me to know what I would expect in Biology at college.'
'Interesting experience and great support. A good taste into A-level sciences'
'Even though Chemistry is hard and confusing, it's fun and a realistic experience'
'I loved the fact that ASFC always think about the future and how the courses are beneficial'
'All three teachers were engaging and enthusiastic'
'A very fun enjoyable and interactive day filled with informative and fun activities'
'Geology rocked'
'I found this day to be an inspiration to my future and have learnt a lot from this'
We would like to thank the schools for participating and behaving well around the college, and we can’t wait for our next conference!
