Getting Ready for Results Day: University & UCAS

Getting ready for Result Day is always a mixture of excitement and nerves. By this stage, most students will have accepted UCAS offers, applied for Student Finance and university accommodation and will be getting ready for university. It’s natural to be a little nervous, but students are often pleasantly surprised on Results Day and get accepted by their university.

What happens on Results Day: University & UCAS Clearing?

Be re-assured there is lots of support in college on Results Day and the day after. The Exams Team will be available to answer any exam related questions and the college Careers Team and some of the Senior Tutors will be available for advice about university and UCAS Clearing on both Thursday 15 August between 8.30am and 3pm and Friday 16 August between 9am and 3pm. Please come to college via main reception. No appointment needed.

Hopefully you will get the grades you need, but if you just miss out, the university might accept you anyway.

Want to go to your UCAS Insurance choice rather than your Firm choice? 

If you meet the grades for your Firm choice, UCAS will automatically place you there and your Insurance choice will automatically be declined. However, your Insurance choice might still be able to offer you a place through Clearing. Contact your Insurance choice to discuss your options. If they have places available, and give permission, you can select ‘I want to apply somewhere else’ on UCAS and will then be able to add a Clearing choice.

Want to change to a different course at the same university?                                                                         

The best thing to do is give the university a call. If they agree, they will send an updated offer for the new course.

Occasionally, you might be offered an alternative by the university, a ‘changed course offer’ (which you will need to accept or decline).

What is UCAS Clearing?                                                                                                                                         

In simple terms, Clearing is how universities fill their places. You will be able to apply through Clearing if:

• You haven’t yet applied through UCAS.
• You applied but either didn’t receive any offers or didn’t accept any offers.
• You accepted offers but didn’t get the grades.
• You got the grades but decide to ‘decline you firm offer’ by using the ‘decline my place’ button on your application (but don’t do this without speaking to someone).

You can search through the UCAS Clearing Service to see what courses have vacancies https://www.ucas.com/clearing-launch and search for Clearing vacancies on individual university websites.

• Once you have found a vacancy you want to apply for, phone the university. You will need your UCAS ID number, a list of your qualifications and grades and be prepared to say why you are interested in the degree. If the university makes you a verbal offer, ask about accommodation (if required).
• Once you have spoken to the university and have a verbal offer, you can add the choice into your UCAS application.
• You can only add one Clearing choice at a time.

You can add a Clearing choice into your UCAS application from 1pm Thursday 15th August
