Students receive Rotary Club awards

27 May 2011

Two Ashton Sixth Form College students have been rewarded for their work in the community at a recent Rotary Club presentation evening.

Isaac Jones received the Albert Hague Trophy for service to the community and a cheque for £100. Isaac was part of a group of 20 volunteers from All Saints Church in Marple who travelled to Mexico with Urban Saints and Amour Ministries charities.

The journey itself took a full 35 hours to complete and once in Mexico the hard work really started. For seven days the group worked tirelessly to build a house for 75 year old widow Margarita. Margarita had previously been living in temporary accommodation which wasn’t suitable for her needs - Isaac and the group have made a massive improvement to her quality of life.

Emily Cookson has been helping out a little closer to home and was awarded the Ashton Sixth Form College Silver Salver and a cheque for £100. Emily has been working with The Greater Manchester Volunteer Core, assisting students at Bridgeway Pupil Referral Unit and children attending the Tameside Hospital School. Emily has been working with children aged from 5 to 16 helping them with literacy and numeracy outside of the school environment.

“I was delighted to present the trophies to these two fantastic role models, the students have already told me how they intend to spend their £100, Emily is putting hers towards the cost of her forthcoming holiday and Isaac has decided to put his towards the cost his driving lessons – very sensible choices!”  Jean Hurlston (Ashton Sixth Form College Chaplain  and President of Ashton Rotary Club)
