Ashton’s very own Oscars!

7 July 2011

Ashton Sixth Form College recently hosted its very own mini-Oscars ceremony at Cineworld Cinema.

Film and Media studies students at the college enjoyed an afternoon of glamour and recognition as part of the ‘Georges’ on Wednesday 6 July. Students on these courses put together their own films, advertising campaigns and screenplays with prizes awarded in many different categories, ranging from ‘Best Director’ to ‘Best Screenplay’.  Ashton Sixth Form students were able to have their say, as voting for the Best Film category took place via the college intranet where students and staff were able to view the films and cast their votes.

The Georges were named after George Coutts, a Media Studies teacher at the college who tragically passed away in 2001. The awards have gone from strength to strength over the years and this was the 9th consecutive year that the awards have taken place.

Awards were presented by College Principal Dr Janet Nevin, plus Academic Director of Media City Dr. Andrew Cooper and other special guests. Brian Copper, Head of Creative Digital Arts kept nominations secret until the big day in order to keep students and staff in suspense.

“These guy’s (the Students) need to get better at taking praise, as their work is outstanding. I think we will be seeing a lot more of them and their work in the future”. (Andrew Cooper Creative Director Media City)
