Earlier in the year 40 students from Ashton Sixth Form College travelled to Marrakech for 4 nights.

The group was made up of students studying Sociology and the college citizenship enrichment group, as well as staff from various departments.

The aim of the trip was to give students an insight into another culture and to visit an area of the world that students wouldn’t typically experience on a family holiday. As one student put it “Marrakech is somewhere that none of us have ever been to, and perhaps won’t have the opportunity to visit in the foreseeable future, a fantastic experience and an exotic stamp in my passport”.

The students had a packed itinerary and gained a fantastic insight into Moroccan culture with visits to a local Mosque and also a Moroccan evening, where students could sample local food and dance to traditional Moroccan music. The group also travelled to one of Morocco’s bustling markets, where things are a little different to the markets in Tameside. Animals both dead and alive were available for purchase, and there were lots of snakes and monkeys on show. Camel rides were more popular, and had a number of staff and students asking themselves which would be comfier, “one lump or two?”

This Saturday the Citizenship group have organised a Charity Fun Run at Dove Stone reservoir from 10am. There are over 50 students taking part with most opting to run in fancy dress – why not head along between 10am and 11.15am to show your support.
