Ashton Sixth Form College’s Remembrance Day service was observed impeccably by hundreds of students and staff across the College.

College Chaplain Rev. Jean Hurlston enlisted the help of Public Services and Music students to mark the occasion and raise awareness amongst the student population. This year’s remembrance service has a special significance as 2011 is also the Royal British Legion’s 90th Anniversary. Music student and cornet player Elliot Waters gave a rendition of The Last Post to mark the start of the two minutes silence, whilst AS Music student Alistair Dodd sounded the Reveille to signal the end of the silence.

Public Services students gave readings and opened the service by creating a small tableau to enable people to visualise situations of conflict. College neighbour Mr Chadwick, who lived through WWII, accepted the college’s invitation to join us during the occasion and we were honoured by his recitation of the Kohima Epitaph.

The two minutes were respected impeccably by a usually busy and bustling campus; the service ended poignantly with Public Services students casting poppy petals onto the tableau before students and staff quietly dispersed.
