Artist insight – former Art student returns

18 April 2013

Kyle Galloway left Ashton Sixth Form College with an A grade in Art. This was just the start of his journey on the road to becoming an established artist, a journey which is yet to end.

Kyle is currently working at Andor Art Gallery in Shoreditch, London www.creativeandorcultural.com

After completing his A-Levels in Ashton, Kyle made the journey to Leeds College of Art to undertake his Foundation Degree in Art and Design, strengthening his knowledge, discovering his own style and developing his technique. His next step took him further south, this time to Wimbledon College of Art for a BA in Fine Art Sculpture.

Kyle graduated with first class honours from Wimbledon College of Arts, part of the highly regarded University of Arts London, in June 2012. His degree show was well received and led to a project where Kyle was invited to curate an exhibition at York College Gallery.

Kyle has stayed in touch with his former art tutor Cathy Beckford, who decided that Kyle could give her current students a fantastic insight into the intricacies of the art world and the journey which must be undertaken to develop the skills needed to be regarded as an ‘artist’.

Kyle worked with students and talked to them about presentation of work, covering exhibiting their work. He advised students on where to go next and why they should look into studying an Art Foundation course. He also talked to the students about his journey so far and on how to navigate the murky depths of the art world.

Kyle is now planning to apply for a Masters course at The Royal College of Art.

“It was really interesting coming back to Ashton Sixth Form College, it felt like stepping back in time, I’ve even had a chance to look at my A-Level projects that I left behind. It was great to speak to enthusiastic students, see their work and advise students that are in the same position as I was just a few years ago.” Kyle Galloway

“It was great for students to get an overview of an art degree course, Kyle was spreading the message that it’s possible to succeed and work in art and that you can get paid work through your art degree. Kyle is an inspirational figure for any budding artist currently studying at A-level and it’s great for them to meet a real life success story.” Cathy Beckford (Teacher of Art and Design)
