Highways England visited Public Services

15 January 2019

Public Services students welcomed Jon Krelle from Highways England.

Highways England, formerly the Highways Agency, operates, maintains and improves the country's motorways and major roads. The company is owned by the government and works alongside the Department for Transport.

Highways England are currently responsible for around 4,300 miles of road network. The government website explains that,

"while this represents only 2 per cent of all roads in England by length, these roads carry a third of all traffic by mileage and two thirds of all heavy goods traffic" (www.gov.uk).

Each of these roads are of course open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, in all weathers imaginable. As a result, the company employs almost 5,000 people across the country and the scope of their reach and responsibility is huge.

Jon who works as a Traffic Officer for Highways England visited the Public Services students to provide a short overview of the company on the whole. He also spoke about his particular role and the day-to-day experiences he has out in the field.

The Public Services department have invited a wealth of incredible visitors to the classroom this past academic year alone. The range of careers available within the Public Services are extensive and are constantly changing. Jon from Highways England is another example of how the students on this course can go on to make a real difference to people's lives, perhaps in roles that may not have seemed the most obvious.
