Pembroke College at Oxford University hold their study day each year, inviting a select number of students to take part. This year, four students from Ashton Sixth Form College were successful at gaining a place on the programme. 

The Study Day focused on 'The Shaping and Making of the Modern World' and the event follows two strands: Humanities and Theology.

The aim of the study day is to allow students to explore university-style learning. Ashton students have the opportunity to develop their skills in independent thinking, forming arguments and developing ideas. It is a chance to work away from the college environment and gain invaluable experience. 

Students began the day with a welcome and various activities in the Pichette Auditorium. They met with fellow individuals from colleges across the country who had also joined the Pembroke College study day, allowing them to meet new people. The first lecture was delivered by Dr. Margaret Coombe and was followed Felix Slade who gave the students an overview of the range of courses that sit within Pembroke College, Oxford. 

Pembroke was formed in 1624 and since then has welcome thousands of students through its door. As part of the study day, students embarked on a campus tour. Even on the cloudiest of days, the college's grand architecture impressed its visitors.

Following a lunch, Dr Peter Claus delivered his lecture on 'Enlightenment and Romanticism' as students then broke in to groups to explore different areas of the topic.

Ashton Sixth Form College is currently home to the 'Stewart Sutherland Centre for Philosophy & World Religions' in partnership with Pembroke College, Oxford.
