Politics attended Model United Nations Conference
Ashton Sixth Form College students currently studying A-Level politics, attended the Model United Nations conference, MUNHIGH 2019.
The conference was held over two days, hosted at Manchester High School for Girls. This year marked the first time Ashton have been involved and MUNHIGH 2019 focused on the theme of 'Justice'.
Schools and colleges from across the country are invited annually to come together to discuss global issues. Bringing people together from different geographical locations made for some exciting and interesting discussions throughout the day.
The conference models the existing United Nations and requires each student to join a nation. They then represent this nation for the duration of the conference. Eight first year students from Ashton represented two nations, New Zealand and South Africa.
The event began with the Welcome Ceremony hosted in the Main Hall, followed by the committees in session. Following two days of sessions with each of the committees represented, the General Assemblies were held.
The model United Nations asked delegates to consider their role on global issues, such as the use of child soldiers and nuclear disarmament. Students are given a unique opportunity to put themselves in the shoes of the UN delegates from across the world. They have to explore some of the problems and issues that are affecting the world right now, and for many, these are issues that they may never have to face in their day-to-day lives. Students in attendance were able to develop their skills in communication and independence. They were able to form arguments and were required to have the evidence to back it up on a huge stage.
During the closing ceremony, New Zealand, as represented by Ashton, received an award for 'Highly Commended' due to their role on the disarmament committee.
