23 September 2019

Team GB have brought home two silver medals from the Underwater Hockey Age Group World Championships.

Jake Charnock, on the U19 Men's team, currently studies Chemistry, English Language and PE at Ashton Sixth Form College.

Harry Thompson, on the U24 Men's team, completed his studies at Ashton this past September achieving BBB in Chemistry, Maths and Physics.

At the championships, Jake's team beat South Africa 5-4 in the play-offs to make it through to final against New Zealand ending 8-2. Harry's team won an incredible 5-0 against South Africa, narrowly missing out on gold in the final against Turkey which ended 3-1.

The Underwater Hockey Club both Jake and Harry attend is the only Underwater Hockey Club in Tameside, Xafira, who also train with the Manchester Squad at Manchester Aquatics.

Underwater Hockey dates back to the 1950s and is now played worldwide. It requires incredible teamwork, strong swimmers with an ability to hold their breath and great speed.

Jake was also recently nominated for Young Sportsman of the Year at the Pride of Tameside Sports Awards 2019.
