12 April 2023

Philosophy and World Religions students have recently completed their 6-session seminar series as part of the OxNet 2023 programme.

Students have explored various topics on 'The Challenge of Religion: Problems and Solutions in a Time of Global Crisis.'

This included seminars on

  • Conspiracy Theory and Religion
  • Global Christianity: Nigerian Pentecostalism
  • Is Christianity an Ecological Disaster?
  • Theorising Gender and Religion: Islam and Women's Rights
  • Secularism and it's limits
  • The Godless Crusade: Religions and Right-Wing Populism in Western Europe

Through an interdisciplinary approach, the seminar series allows students to work closely with academics leading in their field and discuss their thoughts on various topics each week.

Alex, OxNet Coordinator said:

The students have made some fantastic contributions during the sessions; it's been great to see their confidence and idea flourish each week and them to begin to challenge different perspectives. Well done to this year's cohort and a huge thank you to academic at Pembroke College for providing such an engaging seminar series.

A1 XL student, Teo is currently participating with the OxNet programme:

I am halfway through my journey with OxNet and have already learn many valuable skills in such little time. The programme really does treat you like an undergraduate and gives you the tools to quickly pick up how tto work at that level even during your first year of college. It has expedited my essay writing abilities and allowed me to further explore the subject I am passionate about through seminar talks with esteemed academics. OxNet is an amazing way to get a taste of what overall undergraduate study is going to be like and to prepare yourself.

Ashton Sixth Form College are proud to be the host of The Goldsmith's Sutherland Centre for Philosophy and World Religions in partnership with Pembroke College, University of Oxford for over ten years. This long standing partnership means the OxNet Access Programme is offered to students to develop their academic skills and knowledge.
