Year 10 Realising Aspirations 2024 Launch
The Year 10 Realising Aspirations Programme for 2024 has launched to nine schools in the borough. This year, Ashton Sixth Form College welcomes students from Longdendale High School, Fairfield High School for Girls, West Hill School, Audenshaw School, Copley Academy, Droylsden Academy, Hyde High School, Alder Community College and All Saints School. The flagship programme provides students with a unique insight into post-16 education by participating in various subject sessions. It aims to equip students with the confidence and skills to make a successful transition after they leave school.
“We are excited to welcome students to Ashton Sixth Form College for this year’s Realising Aspirations Programme. Not only do we want to challenge participating students but we want them to get a feel for studying at Ashton. Students are treated as if they are in sixth form and with this, our aim is for students to explore a variety of subjects and meet new people with similar interests. The step up from GCSE can be daunting and we hope the programme can support them with starting to think about their next steps to help make informed choices.”

Students will take part in one of six subject strands, engaging in workshops, academic sessions and talks. Pathways include:
- Art & Design
- Digital Technology & Multimedia
- Humanities
- Science & Maths
- Social Sciences
- Performing Arts: Dance & Music
During the Launch Event, Centre Principal, Lisa Richards, introduced students to the college and explored ways to make the most of their time on the programme. The Launch was also supported by Naomi Madeley from the University of Huddersfield. Naomi discussed student life, quizzed students on their knowledge around university and gave information on what to research for those considering applying in the future.
“At Ashton, we have some fantastic links with universities up and down the country. I believe it is important to get students thinking about their next steps as early as possible to understand the different routes they can take. Exploring Year 12 opportunities with Year 10 Realising Aspirations cohort, highlights how they can work closely to institutions leading in their field in the future. Also, as students often undertake an academic assignment during the Year 10 programme, we want to prepare them for not only A-Levels but potentially studying at degree-level and managing their time!”
