Coronavirus response update - 26.03.20

26 March 2020

At 8:00pm this evening, each of us is being asked to show our appreciation to all NHS employees who are putting their lives on the line to help save ours. The task is simple; a minute’s applause. Many former students from the college work locally and regionally for the NHS. It would be wonderful if we could all act together to support these wonderful people. Please remember the simple slogan: stay and home to save lives.

A few updates today.

Ofqual have released a further statement on progress towards the development of a mechanism for awarding grades. The statement can be found at https://www.gov.uk/government/news/further-update-on-2020-exams

In summary, we should have a better idea of the process soon, with the details released after the Easter break.

Today, we took the decision to pause all discussions about Level 2 to Level 3 progression. Students will be contacted after Easter and no student will be disadvantaged as a result of the break in their education. This will provide more time for us to process any information we receive from Ofqual and make fair and considered decisions with all relevant information.

In an attempt to help the NHS locally, the college has opened its car park for NHS workers and has shared our supply of face masks, latex gloves and other personal protective equipment with Tameside hospital. I am aware that a number of staff have volunteered to support the NHS through the volunteering scheme which is amazing and supported fully by the college.

And finally, we saw a slight increase in direct access requests today from 770 on Wednesday to 827 today which is good evidence that your sons and daughters are engaging in their remote learning.

Take care, look after yourself, your families and each other. Stay positive!
